About Acharya

Acharya Shri Unniraman P, an unassuming school teacher from the idyllic village of Badiroor in Kerala, has dedicated over five decades to promoting Yoga, emphasizing its significance and extolling its virtues. Born in 1951 in Kakkodi Village, Kozhikode District, he was the youngest of five children born to Narayanan Nair and Kalyani Amma. His journey towards becoming a beacon of yoga wisdom began unexpectedly when he answered the call to become a teacher, enrolling in a Teachers Training Course (TTC) and eventually becoming a primary school teacher at his alma mater, Badirur School.

At the age of 23, Acharya Unniraman felt drawn to the path of yoga and embarked on a decade-long journey of training under various gurus. He even swam across rivers to get himself trained, such was his passion towards Yoga. By the age of 34, he had acquired his Yoga TTC from NIS Patiala and mastered Kriya Yoga at the Bihar School of Yoga. His life took a transformative turn when he found his spiritual guide in Satyananda Paramahansa.

In addition to his spiritual pursuits, Acharya Unniraman is a devoted family man, married to Soudamini KK, and father to Soumya U, a distinguished P.G Diploma holder in Yoga.

Acharya Unniraman’s journey of self-discovery and selfless service is marked by an exhaustive pursuit of knowledge and training in various disciplines. His achievements are remarkable, including winning the Sanghadhan All Kerala Yogasana Championship in 1988 and nurturing the growth of Badiroor School for over three decades while simultaneously pursuing his passion for yoga teaching.

Beyond the confines of the classroom, Acharya Unniraman’s influence extends to diverse realms such as painting, movies, and drama. However, it was his unwavering commitment to spreading the importance of yoga that led him to resign from his teaching profession and dedicate himself entirely to this noble cause.

Acharya Unniraman’s outreach efforts have been vast and inclusive, with a particular focus on rural communities and marginalized groups. He has conducted numerous yoga camps, including those in Adivasi colonies, and has gone to great lengths that every community should benefit by this ancient wisdom

In 1997, at the age of 48, Acharya Unniraman founded the Patanjali Yoga and Research Centre Charitable Trust in Kozhikode, Kerala, to train yoga teachers who would serve humanity worldwide. Subsequently, he established Tapovanam Ashram in
Badiroor, spreading the ideology and uniqueness of yoga far and wide. 

Acharya Unniraman’s contributions to the field of yoga extend beyond national borders, with impactful initiatives in countries like Cyprus, Australia, and Moscow. The World Diabetes Foundation of Denmark has funded a project to evaluate the impact of Yoga on Diabetes patients, which was spearheaded by Acharya Unniraman in Kuzhanada Medical Trust Hospital, Pathenamthitta, Kerala, India. He has worked tirelessly to promote yoga’s benefits in diverse settings, including medical institutions, schools, and prisons.
